Vor der Panoramaverglasung des Wohnraums öffnet sich das Arabische Meer, während über dem Flügel eine frei schwebende Skulptur aus geschwungenen, blattförmigen Goldelementen hängt – eine raumgreifende Komposition aus Licht, Bewegung und Material, die den Charakter des Instruments in den Raum hinein verlängert. Born from a long-standing and deeply rooted collaboration between Danny Schramm and Steinway & Sons, this instrument bears the signature of one of the world’s most renowned surface artists. Danny Schramm is the only external designer officially permitted to work inside the Steinway & Sons manufacturing facility in Hamburg – alongside the house’s own master craftsmen. Every instrument that emerges from this collaboration carries a personal „Designed by Danny Schramm“ plaque: a mark of singularity that is never issued twice.
The Surface: Depth Meets Radiance
The finish of the „Palma Aurea“ is not decoration – it is an art form in its own right. Across the classic, deep black of the Steinway grand, a multi-layered gold composition unfolds: genuine gold pigments and gold leaf elements that break through the dark surface like organically grown structures. Light and perspective transform the instrument with every angle – at times a restrained shimmer, at others a dramatic brilliance. The legs of the grand carry the same characteristic black-and-gold contrast, completed by solid brass casters that underline the sculptural quality of the piece. Every layer of this finish was applied by hand; every gold accent is a deliberate artistic decision.

The „Palma Aurea“ was installed in an exclusive private residence on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows open onto the Arabian Sea, while above the grand piano a free-floating sculpture of sweeping, leaf-shaped gold elements extends the character of the instrument into the room itself – a spatial composition of light, movement and material.
